Hymn for My Soul (Fantasy): B
All the pieces are in place for a late-career jolt from Joe: his voice, which sounds as good as ever; his material, which includes heart-and-soulful songs by Dylan, George Harrison, John Fogerty, Stevie Wonder, the Subdudes, the Meters, Percy Mayfield and Dan Penn; his stellar backing band, with the likes of Jim Keltner, Benmont Tench, James Gadson and Bob Babbit; and his hot producer, Ethan Johns (Ryan Adams, Kings of Leon, Emmylou Harris). And “Hymn for My Soul” is indeed entirely enjoyable. Too bad it’s not the least bit exciting. Download: “You Haven’t Done Nothin’.”
